Shortly after Emma completed her chemotherapy, I began thinking and praying about something my family could do to support CCRF in their mission of finding a cure for childhood cancers. We knew how lucky we were. Emma's cancer was caught early and it hadn't spread. It was treatable. Ten years later she is here with us, playing softball, fighting with her sister, and getting really excited for junior high. She still runs into our arms, and we can hold her. We can kiss her cheeks and hear her laughter.
At the very same time I am giving thanks to God for Emma's life, I am remembering that every single day there is a child who goes to Heaven too early. There are far too many parents who cannot hold their children anymore. It isn't right--not when there is research to be done-- and not when there is a cure out there. Emma's Hope is our very small way of giving to CCRF in order to make sure that when parents hear the words, "Your child has cancer, " they can take a deep breath and know that this will just be a little bump in the road, a small inconvenience. And then...very soon...they can get back to living and loving, cuddling and laughing.
Emma's Hope is walk that takes place along the beautiful bluffs of Pepin, Wisconsin--population 878. Emma's Hope supporters have huge hearts and voted last year--unanimously--to continue supporting this walk until a cure is found! They are determined and faithful, compassionate and fun! There are no corporate sponsors. There are no wealthy people who come and make large donations. The money literally comes in $10, $25 and $50 at a time. For some families, their donation is being scraped together. And I know that it is being scraped together with love, and it fills my eyes with tears just thinking about it.
On September 19th, at Pepin Area Schools, we will be gathering once again to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Rain or shine, it will be a day full of love, laughter and hope. And...when it's all done...we will be one step closer to finding those cures that will save our precious children.
We set up this page both for the people who come out to walk with us and want to make their donation online, and anybody out there who can't walk with us at Emma's Hope, but wants to support childhood cancer research in honor of Emma so that more parents have the blessing of watching their child grow up.
